         IEEE-488 Interface: KPCMCIA-GPIB

Question:  What are the common causes for “No GPIB Board error message” from TestPoint when using a KPCMCIA-GPIB interface?

Answer: The Model 6524 software requires a properly installed and functional GPIB card with appropriate settings in the initialization file (testpt.ini). There are two common causes that generate this error.

1. Incorrect or incomplete install of the KPCMCIA–GPIB and drivers

For KPCMCIA-GPIB installation and functional verification instructions, refer to the Application note/Installation Guide available in the Document Center of the Keithley web site (www.keithley.com). Run the WALI32 utility to send a *IDN? command to the 6517A and read back the response.

2. Incorrect settings in the testpt.ini file

Once hardware is proven functional (communication with the instrument successful via Wali Utility), verify the io settings are system appropriate. Using Device Manager (My Computer/Control Panel/System/ines GPIB/ ines GPIB-PCMCIA/resources) record the system’s input/output Range setting. Use the starting value in the reported range in the testpt.ini file. TestPoint requires that the starting address be 1080 (hex) or lower. Use Device Manager to force the card to a lower starting address if necessary.

The TESTPT.INI file is located in the directory where the 6524 software was installed (C:\resistiv is the default). Change the default io address (0x2B8) to the starting value reported by Windows' Device Manager. Also add the line: iostep = 2. Change the DMA setting to a negative one since pcmcia cards do not have a DMA feature.
