Two versions of the installation exist. One version is used with the TDS7704B oscilloscope and the other version is used with the TDS7154B, TDS7254B, TDS7404B and CSA7404B oscilloscopes Each family's installation disk is unique to that family and can not be used with oscilloscopes in other families. After receipt of a new oscilloscope or the installation of a new release of software, run Signal Path Compensation (SPC), (located under Utilities->Instrument Calibration...), to ensure peak oscilloscope performance. All probes should also be recalibrated, see Vertical->Vertical Setup...->Probe Cal. When you purchase a new TDS7000B/CSA7000B Series oscilloscope, the main Scope Application and Optional software (e.g. SM, JT3, etc.) are installed at the factory. Some non essential software packages may be installed separately by the user, such as the GPIB Programmer Guide. Refer to the booklet that accompanies each Product Software CD for descriptions and instructions to use their contents, or contact your local Tektronix representative. The software is on multiple CDROMs: - TDS7000B/CSA7000B Series Operating System Restore CD set - TDS7000B/CSA7000B Series Product Software CD - TDS7704B Product Software CD - Optional Applications Software for Windows-Based Oscilloscopes CD. Many of the required Windows files (specifically, the compressed archive files, or .cab files) have been loaded into this directory. General Information ------------------- - Main Oscilloscope Application The main oscilloscope application is critical to the operation of the instrument as an oscilloscope. The application is expected to be running at all times. Even when the application is minimized on the Windows taskbar, oscilloscope error messages, notifiers, etc are always posted to the desktop. - Activating Options Some TDS7000B/CSA7000B Options, such as extended memory, Serial Mask Testing, and application software, are factory installed. If you ordered these Options from the factory, they are already enabled and ready for you to use. If you want to purchase one of these Options, contact your Tektronix representative to order an upgrade kit. Once the purchase transaction is complete, you will be given a new Option Installation Key that you can enter to enable the new Option. Refer to the Option documentation for detailed instructions. - Windows Clipboard Limitations The size of waveforms copied to the clipboard when using the Edit->Copy or Ctrl-C key is limited to the size of the Windows clipboard. Therefore, waveforms with a large record length will not fit on the clipboard. A notifier will warn you in this case. The size of the clipboard is determined by the Windows operating system. File Export is recommended for transferring large waveform records. - PC Hardware and Software Compatibility The TDS7000B/CSA7000B oscilloscope is a sophisticated and highly integrated hardware and software system. The oscilloscope is dependent on the specific version of the PC motherboard and Windows operating system installed at the factory. Any changes to any of the PC hardware or the Windows operating system may affect the performance of the instrument. - Power Configuration & Settings Tektronix recommends that you not modify the power-related settings in either the BIOS or the Power Management area of Windows. They are set at the factory to a configuration that is optimal for the instrument. Changing these settings can prevent the oscilloscope from operating properly. To maintain proper operation Tektronix recommends that you not enable Standby mode or Screen Saver. - Network Security Windows XP contains an integrated software firewall that is enabled by default. The Windows XP firewall allows network access from the instrument onto a network but not from a network into the instrument. External Applications requiring access into the instrument will require that the Windows XP firewall be disabled. To disable the firewall, minimize the scope application, bring up the control panel from the start menu, double click "Network Connections", double click "Local Area Connection" click the "Advanced" tab and uncheck the box. Click OK to save the new setting. The enabled Windows XP firewall may provide some protection from Network worm-type viruses. For additional protection you may enable Norton Internet Security provided you register the copy with Symantec. Norton Internet Security blocks all access to and from the network by default. Norton Internet Security contains a step-by-step setup process to enable network access when activated. A link to the installation files is included on the oscilloscope desktop. -Antivirus Protection For units operating with Windows XP, a link to Norton Internet Security/Norton Antivirus installation files is included on the oscilloscope desktop. The Norton Antivirus installation included includes 90 days of antivirus updates. If you connect this instrument to a network, we highly recommend that you activate the antivirus software. Prior to leaving Tektronix, this instrument was checked and considered clean of known viruses. Virus Detection software packages can consume significant Windows Resources when run continuously. This degrades the performance of the oscilloscope. Tektronix recommends that virus detection software be run once at power up and then exited. This will ensure that the oscilloscope has the resources needed to perform as expected. -Product Upgrades From time to time Tektronix releases new versions of the product software or optional application software. Customers can download these from the Tektronix web site at URL www.tektronix.com/software. As Microsoft releases new operating system patches, Tektronix endeavors to test critical patches within two weeks of release. A list of the tested patches can be found at the above URL and entering "Security Threat" in the "Find by Model Number or Keyword" field. The "Download" button downloads a copy in Microsoft Excel format; if Excel is not available, click on the "Release Notes" link to get a text version. Patches that have been tested by Tektronix can be downloaded directly from Microsoft's website at the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/downloads/default.mspx. One way to receive timely information on new software updates, new products from Tektronix and other useful information is to join MyTek. Visit URL http://www.tektronix.com/mytek to become a member. Customers that download and install service packs and patches that have not been tested by Tektronix do so at their own risk. If an update does adversely impact the instrument, customers can call the Tektronix Technical Support Center and ask for help in recovering, or use the supplied operating system, product software and application software CDs that came with your instrument to return the instrument to its factory-delivered condition. - Remote PC Control Software Support The TDS7000B/CSA7000B series uses Tektronix proprietary technology to ensure optimal waveform update rate. To accomplish this, the waveform data and user interface data are combined into one video stream. This technology creates limitations on the use of certain third party applications such as PCAnywhere, LapLink, VNC, and Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection. The keyboard Print Screen key is also affected by this technology. Rather than using the Print Screen key to capture screen images, use the copy (Ctrl-C) and export (Ctrl-E) functions of the TDS7000B/CSA7000B. - Operating the instrument in Windows XP safe mode If the Windows XP operating system is operated in Safe Mode, an external monitor must be connected to the Scope XGA Out connector on the rear panel to view the Safe Mode Display output. -Vertical Scale Readouts The vertical scaling information displayed for each channel, math or reference waveform is in terms of units/division where units may be volts, amps or watts depending on the probe attached. Known Issues and Work-Arounds ----------------------------- - Limitation of B Trigger Reset A minimum of 100ns must exist between the B Event that triggers the oscilloscope and any B-Event occurring after Reset becomes TRUE. - Users setting the instrument for Chinese or Korean fonts have noticed garbled characters in the Oscilloscope application (e.g. the character used with cursor readouts.) The best solution for this problem is to install the desired fonts to the local language in the Control Panel's Regional Options selection, Input Locales tab. Then keep the 'locale', on the General tab, set to 'English (United States)'. - A reference waveform that is saved while acquiring in Fast Acquisition (FastAcq) mode or Waveform Database (WfmDB) mode is stored as an 'image' rather than as a record of the acquired samples. Therefore, like live FastAcq and Waveform database waveforms, references created in either mode cannot be zoomed. These references cannot be scaled or re-positioned vertically or horizontally. - Reference waveforms created when in XY or XYZ mode cannot be displayed while acquiring in XY or XYZ mode. To display a reference waveform created in XY or XYZ, set the display mode to YT and recall the waveform of interest. - In the math system, the spectral expressions are limited to a single waveform source (Ch1, Ch2, Ch3, Ch4, Math1, Math2, Math3, Math4). This applies to the SpectralMag, SpectralPhase, SpectralReal, and SpectralImag operators. Expressions like SpectralMag(Ch1*CH2) and SpectralPhase(INV(Ch4)) are not allowed. To accomplish multi waveform expressions, use two math waveforms. For example: Math1 = Ch1*Ch2 ; Math2 = SpectralMag(Math1) or Math3 = INV(Ch4) ; Math4 = SpectralPhase(Math3). Spectral operations are not allowed on reference waveforms (Ref1, Ref2, Ref3, and Ref4). - When math waveforms are created, position and scale are automatically set to ensure a good display. Any change made to waveform scale or position using a programmatic interface, such as GPIB, will be overwritten by the auto scaling at creation. If rescaling is desired, simply wait 10 - 15 seconds after creation to scale or position the waveform. - For standard masks (requires option SM on TDS7000B instruments) the menu system is configured to offer only masks for which the bit rate of the standard is appropriate to the nominal bandwidth of the instrument. All masks provided within the family are available over the programmatic interfaces (GPIB) for all instruments, and the user is cautioned to insure that there is adequate bandwidth for the standard being tested. Also note that many mask standards (E1, E2, E3, 100baseT, etc) specify a voltage setting. Therefore the instrument's Autoset function isn't allowed the latitude to adjust the vertical setting. The user can bypass this restriction by setting External Attenuation in the Vertical Setup / Probe Atten control window. - The proper enabling of some options through the Option Key mechanism can require two reboot cycles following a new installation, to fully propagate through the system. - When enabling a secondary display, the colors for both displays must be set to High Color (16 bit) mode in the Display Properties Settings page. Some versions of the User Manual erroneously indicate the internal monitor must be set to True Color (24 bit). The correct setting is High Color (16 bit). -This software version adds Pinpoint(tm) triggering features that might not have been previously available on this unit. These new features use trigger timers for the B trigger path that were not calibrated with early software versions. Although not previously calibrated, the actual performance of the new B trigger timers will typically be near the specified, fully-calibrated performance. The B timers will become fully calibrated when the instrument receives its next annual factory calibration. The A trigger path trigger timers remain fully calibrated with the new software version.
