These are the installation instructions for replacing the firmware
in an MDO4000C series oscilloscope with the firmware in the MDO4000C_v*.zip
file.

x.xx is the firmware version. For example, 1.00.

Caution:
Loading new firmware will cause all previously saved reference
waveforms to be deleted. You may wish to save the internal reference
waveforms to external .isf files, before loading the new firmware.
Loading new firmware will not affect existing saved setups.
(To find the relevant menus referred to below, push the Save/Recall
button labeled "Menu" which is located in the area below the screen.)
To save an internal reference (Ref) waveform to a .isf file, first
display (turn on) the reference waveform. Then go to the Save
Waveform menu, set the Source to the appropriate Ref, set the
Destination to File, and proceed to save to USB media or a network
location. Because the oscilloscope can only recall single-waveform
.isf files, you should:
- Be certain to save each reference waveform to a separate .isf
file, do not use the save-all-waveforms-to-a-single-file
feature.
After the new firmware has been loaded, you can recall each .isf file
to one of the reference waveforms, using the Recall Waveform menu.
Instructions:
1. Copy the file 'MDO4000C_v*.img' to suitable USB media in the root
or topmost folder. Most brands of USB flash drives and USB hard
drives are suitable media.
2. Check to make sure there are no other files in that folder that
have a file suffix of ".img". For example, there must not be any
files named firmware.img. If you have multiple .img files, the
oscilloscope may not load the correct one.
3. Turn the oscilloscope off.
4. Insert the USB media into either of the USB Host ports on the
front of the oscilloscope. (The two host ports on the rear of the
oscilloscope may also be used.)
5. Turn on the oscilloscope.
After a few seconds, the screen should display a message stating
that the firmware upgrade procedure is in progress.
Do not turn off the oscilloscope or remove the USB media
until prompted to do so! The procedure takes anywhere from eight
to twelve minutes, depending on the brand and speed of USB media
being used.
6. When the screen says that the upgrade is complete, turn off
the oscilloscope.
7. Remove the USB media.
8. Turn on the oscilloscope.
The first boot of the oscilloscope following a firmware upgrade
will be extended in order to restore saved setups. Successive
instrument boots will have normal boot time.
When the oscilloscope powers up, you should see a message
indicating that the firmware upgrade procedure has
successfully completed.
Do not turn off the oscilloscope at this time!
Wait at least one minute after the message appears, or wait until
the Menu Off button responds to a press before turning off the
oscilloscope. Some firmware versions subsequently update other
parts of the instrument after the firmware upgrade procedure
message is displayed. This portion of the update can take up to
one minute to complete.
9. Perform a Signal Path Compensation (SPC)
On first power-up, the scope may prompt you to complete a
Signal Path Compensation(SPC) operation. The SPC process takes
fifteen to twenty minutes.
Do the following to start a Signal Path Compensation:
a. Disconnect all analog, rf and digital probes from the scope!
b. Press the "Utility" button
c. Press the "Utility Page" soft button immediately below
the display.
d. Select "Calibration" on the Utility page menu.
e. Press "Signal Path" soft button immediately below the display.
f. Press "Compensate Signal Paths" soft button on the right edge
of the display.
g. Wait for SPC to complete.
Currently Installed Version:
The firmware version currently installed in the oscilloscope is shown
in the About menu. Push the Utility button, then the bottom soft key
labeled "About".
Troubleshooting:
- If you try to load an older version of firmware, or the same
version that is currently installed, the oscilloscope will not load
the firmware and will display a message indicating the firmware on
the USB media is not newer than the current firmware.
You can override this, and force the oscilloscope to load an older
firmware file, by creating an empty file called "forceinstall.txt"
on the USB media in the root or topmost folder.
- If the firmware does not load, verify that the USB media is
supported by the oscilloscope. Push the Save/Recall Menu button
and attempt to save a setup to the USB media. If you cannot save
and recall .set files, the USB media may not be supported.
Try another brand of USB media. If other brands do not work,
try one of the other USB host ports on the oscilloscope. There
are two host ports on the front and two on the back of the
oscilloscope.
- If the firmware does not load and the USB media otherwise works
fine, then the firmware file may be corrupted. Try downloading
the firmware again.
- New versions of firmware are released from time to time. Visit
